Cheongpungjeong
Serene and beautiful moonlight on the Geumgang River... Cheongpungjeong
Cheongpungjeong in Okcheon is a pavilion located at the foot of Baektosan Mountain (171 m) in Seokho-ri. The Geumgang River flowing in front of it boasts clear water that is always illuminated by moonlight. This area, characterized by typical canyons, boasts a breathtaking landscape with rock formations that unfold like folding screens. While the Geumgang River is known for its outstanding natural beauty, it is also a waterway that holds stories and histories. That’s true for Cheongpungjeong and Myeongworam. Myeongworam is a riverside rock where one can turn around and see Cheongpungjeong on their back, to the left. The characters 明月岩 ("bright," "moon," "rock") are vividly carved onto the vertically sheared rocks. The protagonist of this rock is Myeongwol, a woman from the Joseon dynasty. Myeongwol is known as a woman who shared a passionate love with Kim Okgyun (1851–1894), a prominent Enlightenment thinker during the modernization period, and conveyed her sincerity through her death. The path to Cheongpungjeong starts from Jeong Ji-yong’s birthplace and follows a cherry blossom road drive course for about 4 km, leading to the National Health Center. If you follow the signposts from there and go for another 2 km, you will come face to face with Cheongpungjeong. Cheongpungjeong was established by Kim Jong-gyeom, a prominent figure in the late Joseon dynasty, and was relocated and restored by Okcheon-gun Office in 1996.
